ARGGGH! Nothing grinds my gears more in a Hollywood movie or TV show as the plot where we are supposed to feel sorry for some highly unattractive shlub who has fallen for a women who is a perfect 10. Instead of saying, “Hey, why don’t you look for a woman closer to your level?” the movie begs us root for him while he wrings his hands and says, “I’m such a nice person. I swear I would treat her really well. Why won’t she just give me a chance?” Because it’s not about chances! It’s about attraction. And he clearly isn’t attracted to any of his fellow 4s or even the 7s. No, he has to have that supermodel looking woman. And we’re supposed to hope against hope that she will “give him a chance.”

You know what I have never seen a movie about? An overweight woman with not especially pretty features and an ordinary personality who has fallen in love with a male model and wants to know, “Whyyyyy won’t he just give me a chance? I’m a good person!”

Next time you find yourself wondering why the woman won’t “give him a chance,” ask yourself whether a woman of equivalent looks would ever get a chance.
