I'm not even black and I am afraid to hike alone. I hiked a lot my first year of college, even when I was in fact accosted and followed by a naked man in the hills (long story.) But eventually over the years the stories of women (well and men too) being attacked and killed in the wilderness got to me. I can't imagine how much more scary and uncomfortable it would be for a black woman. I think there's a perception that black people are less likely to hike or camp, like it's a cultural divide. But there's no reason black people shouldn't take equal enjoyment of our country's beautiful wilderness. Would love to see groups organized to change this.
